Sin duda alguna, en los últimos años el estudio e investigación en relación a los Trastornos del Espectro del Autismo (TEA) ha ido en aumento, permitiéndonos por un lado mejorar las prácticas profesionales relacionadas con esta condición y por ende, mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas con TEA y su entorno, que es en realidad lo fundamental.
Parte de este avance ha estado orientado a la investigación del autismo femenino, el gran olvidado durante décadas.
Hasta hace muy poco la estadística nos decía que la incidencia de autismo en mujeres era de 1:4, es decir, una por cada cuatro hombres; mientras que si hablamos de autismo de alto funcionamiento (Síndrome de Asperger en manuales anteriores al DSM-V) la incidencia es aún menor, representada por 1:8, es decir, una mujer por cada ocho varones.
Estos datos nos llevaron a formular cuestiones como “¿Por qué el autismo se manifiesta en menor medida en las mujeres?” o “¿Qué diferencias existen para que la prevalencia sea mayor en los hombres?”.
En la actualidad, pese a que el número de diagnósticos a mujeres dentro del espectro continua siendo menor que en los hombres, se ha demostrado que uno de los principales factores de esta diferencia han sido los grandes sesgos de sexo/género en los estudios de investigación, puesto que la muestra de mujeres en este tipo de investigaciones ha sido muy escasa, e incluso nula en ocasiones. Evidentemente, resulta muy complicado hablar de las características del autismo femenino sin contar con mujeres en los estudios…
Además de este importante sesgo en la investigación, debemos tener en cuenta dos criterios importantes que han dificultado la identificación y diagnóstico del autismo femenino hasta el momento:
- Diferencias en la actividad cerebral: el estudio “Neural self-representation in autistic women and association with compensatory camouflaging” (su traducción al castellano “Autorepresentación neuronal en mujeres autistas y asociación con enmascaramiento compensatorio”) señala que existen diferencias en personas con autismo dependientes de su sexo/género. En este estudio, se determina que el área social tiene una mayor actividad cerebral en mujeres, dando lugar a conductas socialmente más adaptadas y por tanto más desapercibidas, lo cual provoca una dificultad en la identificación y diagnóstico.
- Enmascaramiento: con este término se ha hecho referencia a las conductas, que de forma estratégica las personas autistas/con autismo (principalmente mujeres) han desarrollado para minimizar las consecuencias de la visibilidad del TEA en sus relaciones sociales. Este enmascaramiento también ha dificultado la identificación y diagnóstico en mujeres autistas/con autismo sin Discapacidad Cognitiva.
Concienciar sobre estas diferencias ya reconocidas es fundamental para mejorar la práctica clínica y diagnóstica con mujeres autistas/con autismo. En esta línea, nace en febrero de 2018 en nuestro país CEPAMA, Comité para la Promoción y Apoyo de la niña y Mujer Autista.
Gracias a CEPAMA y el gran movimiento que está realizando por visibilizar y dignificar a la mujer autista/con autismo, se han realizado recientemente dos actos relevantes.
Por un lado, la aprobación de la PNL (Proposición No de Ley) en el Congreso de los Diputados “Las Mujeres en el TEA, doble discriminación” (pág. 5). A través de esta propuesta se solicita una mayor investigación estadística sobre género en el autismo, así como la activación de protocolos orientados a la protección de la mujer con TEA, ya que presenta una doble vulnerabilidad.
Nunca olvidaré una de las frases de Carmen Molina (coord. CEPAMA) en la Jornada Gratuita de Lleida 2018 #StopMMS:
Ser mujer no es fácil. Si además se tiene algún tipo de diversidad, menos aún.
Por otro lado, en junio de 2018 se llevó a cabo la jornada “Mujeres autistas: desde dentro del espectro”, primer acto de nuestro país en el que mujeres con TEA ponen voz y experiencia al autismo femenino: diagnóstico, maternidad, mundo laboral, etc.

Sin duda, en nuestra revolución feminista lucharemos por los derechos de todas, por una mayor concienciación sobre la doble vulnerabilidad y por un proceso de diagnóstico e intervención digno.
